In 1978-79, as Big Powderhorn Mountain was bringing skiers from across the Midwest, just across the road, Powdermill Inn was built to welcome them. Local lore tells us the original owners—a group of pilots including Jack Schillinger—designed the bar's interior to resemble an airplane flight deck or cockpit, creating one of the most unique après-ski experiences in the UP.
For years, this wasn't just a bar. It was THE gathering place. The central hub where ski clubs stayed, snowmobile enthusiasts met, bands played, weddings & proms celebrated, and après-ski stories were born. If you skied Big Powderhorn in the '80s and '90s, you have memories here.
In 1995, after a major renovation, the property joined Best Western International and evolved into year-round lodging. But by the mid-2000s, the bar quietly closed its doors to the public.
THE REVIVAL:
In December 2025, nearly two decades later, we re-opened the bar as the Powder Keg Saloon. We are working hard to transform the place once again into YOUR gathering place in Bessemer, MI.
We look forward to serving you beer & your favorite cocktails along with delicious pizza and shareable bar snacks! Check out our live music, monthly karaoke and other community events.
